What is a Soul, and Why Do We All Have One?
If there’s one thing that humanity has pondered since the dawn of self-awareness, it’s the concept of the soul. We’ve meditated on it, argued over it, written countless philosophical treatises about it, and—let’s be honest—probably lost some sleep over it too. So, let’s tackle the question head-on: What is a soul, and why do we (presumably) all have one?
A Consciousness Conundrum
Some speculate that every life-form in our universe has consciousness, but does that automatically mean it has a soul? Are the two interchangeable, or is one merely the byproduct of the other? Does a beetle have a soul? How about a houseplant? And what about that suspiciously smug-looking rock in your garden—does it have a spirit lurking within, waiting for the right moment to judge your landscaping choices?
Well, the jury’s still out. Near-death experiencers (NDE’rs) and spiritual seekers have suggested that consciousness itself is evidence of an underlying soul, but that raises another question: Can you have a soul without a physical body? And, conversely, can a body exist without a soul? Is that what a zombie is? And if so, are we being unfairly judgmental towards the undead?
The Soul’s Purpose: Steering the Ship

One way to think about the soul is as a cosmic GPS. It doesn’t necessarily tell you how to drive, but it gives you a direction, recalculating when you take unexpected detours (because let’s be real, humans are not the best at sticking to the plan). It’s there to help navigate this physical existence, observing, learning, and growing from each experience. Some say that souls choose their incarnations—opting for challenges, relationships, and hardships to evolve spiritually. It’s a bold choice, considering some of us get stuck in rush hour traffic for half our lives.
But what happens when the body is alive, yet the soul seems… absent? Some traditions speak of “soulless” individuals—hollow shells, puppets of fate, or those who have severed their spiritual connection. If that’s the case, could an AI ever have a soul? (Asking for a friend.)
Soulful or Soulless? The Great Debate
Modern spiritual perspectives suggest that a soul is an energetic essence—a conscious fragment of a greater whole. Many NDE accounts describe souls as pure energy, capable of existing beyond time and space. This idea implies that souls aren’t bound by physical forms but rather inhabit them for the purpose of experience. Rocks, while steadfast and reliable, don’t exactly have much to experience (unless you count erosion as an adventure).
On the other hand, animistic traditions suggest that everything has a spirit. Native cultures have long revered the essence within trees, mountains, rivers, and even the wind. In that case, maybe rocks do have souls—just ones with an exceptionally long attention span.
So, What’s the Verdict?
If we accept that the soul is an observer, a traveler, and an experiencer, then it stands to reason that every living being has one—or, at the very least, attracts one. The richer and more diverse the experience, the more appealing the incarnation. If that’s the case, then maybe some souls are drawn to action-packed rollercoaster lives, while others opt for the slow-paced existence of, say, a house cat (which honestly doesn’t sound like a bad gig).
Whether we’re navigating life’s ups and downs with a guiding force or just winging it, one thing is for sure: the soul remains one of the greatest mysteries of existence. And perhaps that’s the point—it’s a riddle meant to be explored, not solved.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go check on that smug rock in my garden. Just in case. 😉
